About Maria
Maria Wainscott is a dedicated sports journalist currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Broadcast and Digital Journalism at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, specializing in the Sports Media track on an academic scholarship. With a passion for storytelling, live broadcasting, and digital content creation, she has built a dynamic career covering collegiate and professional sports.
Maria recently graduated Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame, earning a degree in Pre-Law and American Studies, with a minor in Sport, Media, and Culture. During her time at Notre Dame, she held key leadership roles in sports broadcasting, working with WVFI Sports Radio, NDTV, and Fighting Irish Media. She also served as Student Sideline Producer for Notre Dame Football and Big Ten Football on NBC Sports and Peacock, gaining hands-on experience in live game coverage and sports production. Additionally, she published a senior thesis through Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters, titled:
"Storytelling the Storytellers: Female Sideline Reporters of American Football. Examining Gender, Workplace, and Hope." Her research explored the challenges and progress of women in sports media, highlighting their evolving role in the industry.
At Syracuse, Maria has continued to break barriers, becoming the first-ever sideline reporter for basketball productions on ACC Network shows at the university. She also co-hosts Newhouse After Noon, a sports radio show on ESPN Syracuse, and serves as a sportswriter and reporter for Syracuse Football, covering the team from summer training camp through bowl season and into the NFL Draft process.
Beyond collegiate athletics, Maria expanded her professional experience with the Washington Commanders, where she worked in team media, further sharpening her skills in professional sports coverage. As she continues to grow in her field, she remains committed to delivering compelling, insightful, and engaging sports journalism across multiple platforms.
